A Better Brand... Beautycounter

This startling statistic is just one of the reasons why I have decided to use Beauty Counter products.  Doesn’t it seem a bit odd that a country such as ours lags so far behind in consumer safety in regards to the cosmetic industry?  It is no longer safe to believe that our government looks out for our health. I think we all know that there is business to be run and money to be made, so those two factors trump safety every time across the board. Unfortunately, it is women and children who pay the price. Women because they buy and use a majority of these products and the children second hand because what mom takes in, baby takes in while in utero.

Yes, depressing isn’t it.  There are chemicals all around us, and you would drive yourself crazy if you thought you could control every one. There are over 80,000 chemicals in existence, probably more, and of those, very few are tested for safety.  These chemicals that are found in food, beauty products,...

Your Healing Basket

This week in The Mom Map I talk about the importance of having a healing basket. A healing basket is what you reach for when you hear that awful thump in the middle of the night or just the screams of terror when you know immediately that not everything is ok. All you moms know what I am talking about. I have too many stories to tell but I do know that every mom has gone through a stressful situation of not knowing what to do in the moment.  For me I learned early on to distract my children from the pain with something soft and something they could connect to. I would then administer the essential oils, the herbs and tinctures to make them feel ok. Sometimes it was just the time out that was needed, other times it  required more attention, and the healing basket was the grounding that was needed for both of us. I found that it grounded me as well, and gave me comfort that everything would be ok.

I want to share what is in my healing basket because...

Bone Broth... Food is Medicine

I started making bone broth as part of my healing regimen using the GAPS diet almost nine years ago.  I think of it as a total healing food, and it is what I recommend to all clients, even my vegetarian ones.   I remember those difficult mornings in the beginning when I was in so much pain, I could not even think about eating, let alone bone broth.  However, I knew that I needed building blocks to rebuild my gut.   I would ladle some into a mug and drink its golden goodness, often adding sauerkraut to give it a probiotic boost.  It gave me strength that was noticeable, and whenever my health falters, I go right back to a pure broth regimen.

These days I am not using just broth to survive like I did it the beginning, but practically use it everyday with most meals, such as for the base for sauces, soups, and I cook our beans and rice in broth as well.  Why is it so important to me?  Well, bone broth is an easy way to get essential vitamins and...

Beet Kvass- My Healing Tonic

I love me my beet kvass… If you were lucky enough to read my first blog post, it detailed how I came to name my nutrition business, Purple Beet Nutrition.  So I won’t go into all the details here, but know that there were a few reasons, and beet kvass was one of them.

I came to beet kvass because I was in a healing crisis, and had read of the medicinal qualities of this ancestral fermented drink.  Beet kvass is actually my favorite fermented drink.  It is a healing tonic that strengthens the blood, detoxifies liver, aids digestion, alkalizes blood, and is truly a healing food… It has been used for centuries because of its medicinal value, and it is relatively simple to make. It is important to note that because it is fermented you might get a healing reaction from drinking it. For example, drink half a cup to start with, and then go from there. If you start to feel a bit funky, then don’t drink more, slowly work your way up from there.

Raw Milk and Me

I love raw milk. I believe in its healing qualities, and think of it as medicine for myself and my family. My family and I have been drinking raw milk for the last three years.

I was not always a fan of raw milk. I actually thought it kinda "weird" because I grew up on SAD (standard American diet), and thought anything that was not what everybody else was drinking (or doing) was wrong or weird...
Yes, I am a product of first generation parents who eagerly grasped onto mainstream culture, because they knew no other way. And unfortunately, they are now facing autoimmune dis- eases because of their diet, I believe. A diet that was (and is) heavy in vegetable oils and cooked foods, things that lasted a long time in our oversized pantry...

But since the birth of my son almost ten years ago, I realized that there are different ways in doing things, and often against what I always thought was right. I started doing different things with noticible results. I started doing my own research,...

Healing Food

                            What is Healing Food?

Are you not feeling great? Do you wish you had more energy? Have you recently been sick?

                           You need healing food!

Healing Food is food that feeds and nourishes you. It builds and energizes you at a cellular level, to make you feel fantastic! This food is packed with vitamins and minerals, and known historically, to sustain cultures. Nutrients build the cells; cells build the organs; organs build the systems; and systems build YOU!

Healing food is real, nutrient dense food. It is the food that you find on the outer aisles of the grocery store, at the farmers market, or better yet, your own backyard. The time has come to reclaim the local economies with the food we eat, and gain empowerment in the kitchen. In doing so we are saying no to corporate food, and no to chemicals...

Poop Matters... (I know this is uncomfortable, but it shouldn't be. ;-))

We all poop. How we poop and what we poop really deserves more respect than we give it. We are embarrassed to poop, scared to poop, and simply just can’t poop? Or, we poop too much? Why? There are so many reasons emotional and physical, that are tied up in the bacterial chaos of our colon that we just need to get out.

                                             “Better Out Than In”

This is something I have been saying to my kids for a long time…

Do you check your poop? I am here to tell you, you should. Sorry about that, but the truth is, it is one of the easiest ways to check in on your health, AND also a way for you to check in on your kids’ digestive health. I’m not kidding! Growing up, my three kids would here me from the door asking how does it look? what color is it? Sometimes they would answer, and other times no. At first it...

The Top Ten Things I Do To Support My Family's Health

Its that time of year… My kids have already been sick one time so far, partly due to exhausting schedules and the fires that we had up in Northern California. We are experiencing some warm weather this week, and I’m sure fall will tighten up soon, and help chill us out. So much has been going on in our world these past couple of months, and I have not been immune to feeling the stress. So in times like these I really rely on my go-to’s to keep myself and my family healthy. I wanted to share my top ten ideas to supporting and maintaining health.

1. Eat probiotic rich foods. A lot has been published lately questioning the benefits of probiotics, and in some way I agree. I am not a fan of supplements, and always try to do it with food first. So one of my non negotiable items is a spoonful of sauerkraut each day. It’s a hard sell in the first couple of days, but the palette gets used to it, and so will you and your kids. You can also do yogurt or coconut...
