Its that time of year… My kids have already been sick one time so far, partly due to exhausting schedules and the fires that we had up in Northern California. We are experiencing some warm weather this week, and I’m sure fall will tighten up soon, and help chill us out. So much has been going on in our world these past couple of months, and I have not been immune to feeling the stress. So in times like these I really rely on my go-to’s to keep myself and my family healthy. I wanted to share my top ten ideas to supporting and maintaining health.
1. Eat probiotic rich foods. A lot has been published lately questioning the benefits of probiotics, and in some way I agree. I am not a fan of supplements, and always try to do it with food first. So one of my non negotiable items is a spoonful of sauerkraut each day. It’s a hard sell in the first couple of days, but the palette gets used to it, and so will you and your kids. You can also do yogurt or coconut yogurt if you are non dairy.
2. Eat more vegetables and soups. Warming foods with broths and stock.
3. Unplug yourself. Turn of wi-fi in the evenings. Encourage crafting, reading, non electronic games.
4. Get familiar with essential oils. Choose a recommended brand and use essential oils for preventative care and acute care. My top oils are Thieves/On-Guard blend, a digestive blend such as ginger, fennel, or peppermint, and lavender.
5. Drink plenty of water. Warm lemon water with honey for throat, add fresh grated ginger for belly aches. Coconut water is also very hydrating.
6. Epsom salt baths. When my kids come home from late practices I have them take a bath with epsom salts and lavender essential oil. It grounds them. * Make sure you have a chlorine filter for your water.
7. Eat less sugar and processed foods. I would like to say no sugar, but life happens, and for us we have birthdays this season. Follow an 80/20 here. If sick though, eliminate sugar completely.
8. Rescue Remedy on hand. Rescue Remedy is a Bach Flower remedy used to provide natural stress relief. I have used it for my kids and myself since they were toddlers. It works really well for stressful times whether it is late nights, early mornings, it helps.
9. Supplements. Although not a fan of supplements, I do recommend a few during this season and they are Cod Liver Oil (not fermented) and Liposomal Vitamin C, and I’m also a fan of elderberry syrup.
10. Get outside everyday. Walk barefoot, and sweat if you can. Exercise is key even if is cold outside.
