Beet Love = Purple Beet Nutrition

It was wrapped up in a funky hippie skirt, the kind with the little prayer bells on it, that he had picked up at a garage sale. As I unwrapped the skirt I was taken aback and a little confused about what I saw inside. It was a very large, deep reddish, round and scruffy looking beet, yes a beet! Ahhh, I get it, the beet held significance because it was that summer ( the summer we worked in Alaska as raft guides) that we both read, Jitterbug Perfume by Tom Robbins. We both fell in love with each other on a different level and believed it was the book that fueled our passion. Hence the beet…

I have to admit I never ate that beet; I just let it sit on the kitchen table as a centerpiece and reminder of my love. I have never been fond of beets, and when they would appear in my CSA box, I would always look at them and smile as I gave them away to beet...

Raw Milk and Me

I love raw milk. I believe in its healing qualities, and think of it as medicine for myself and my family. My family and I have been drinking raw milk for the last three years.

I was not always a fan of raw milk. I actually thought it kinda "weird" because I grew up on SAD (standard American diet), and thought anything that was not what everybody else was drinking (or doing) was wrong or weird...
Yes, I am a product of first generation parents who eagerly grasped onto mainstream culture, because they knew no other way. We all poop. How we poop and what we poop really deserves more respect than we give it. We are embarrassed to poop, scared to poop, and simply just can’t poop? Or, we poop too much? Why? There are so many reasons emotional and physical, that are tied up in the bacterial chaos of our colon that we just need to get out.

It's That Time of Year Again... Fire Cider

Many years ago I got introduced to the work of Rosemary Gladstar, a pioneering herbalist who concocted a Fire Cider recipe that got really popular as a immune booster during winter months. I have made it quite a few times and am always grateful when I have it in the kitchen.  Gladstar's mission was to blend medicinal herbs for wellness and spread the word about how plants heal.  The original formula contained garlic, onions, horseradish root, ginger root, hot peppers, sometimes turmeric, and often echinacea; all powerful immune boosters that help fight off infections, colds, and flus.  The following recipe is Rosemary's recipe. (On a side note, there are now companies selling Fire Cider, which I cannot support because they have trademarked the name so small herbalists can not make their own. My solution is to get in the kitchen and make it yourself.)

The Top Ten Things I Do To Support My Family's Health

 

Its that time of year… My kids have already been sick one time so far, partly due to exhausting schedules and the fires that we had up in Northern California. We are experiencing some warm weather this week, and I’m sure fall will tighten up soon, and help chill us out. So much has been going on in our world these past couple of months, and I have not been immune to feeling the stress. So in times like these I really rely on my go-to’s to keep myself and my family healthy. I wanted to share my top ten ideas to supporting and maintaining health.

1. Eat probiotic rich foods. A lot has been published lately questioning the benefits of probiotics, and in some way I agree. I am not a fan of supplements, and always try to do it with food first. Hello Again.

Welcome to Purple Beet!  I am excited to start a new chapter here, and share what I have learned along the way. I will primarily be blogging about food and nutrition, raising kids, non toxic living, good books, and I will do my best to keep it interesting.

Right now, I am luxuriating in the fact that I have time to dedicate to my practice and to my passion. For the past 15 years, I have been a stay at home mom, as well as a homeschooling mom for the past 10 years. Yesterday I dropped off my 8 year old daughter for her first day of "regular" school.  It was awesome, for me and for her. We will see what today brings, but new beginnings are good for the soul.  I have a lot of feelings about this transition, and it will take me a few days...
